Kertai

November 2011

When I was in high school I was a trendsetter. I was the girl at school who knew what was cool & hip before anyone else knew what was cool & hip. The one trend I like is personalizing your cell phone, or Ipod with decorative charms and straps.

In Japan, cell phone charms & straps are very popular. The straps are called Kertai and they come in hundreds of designs, sometimes based on Japanese pop-icons, like Rilakkuma, Hello Kitty, and popular anime figures.

The photos below were taken on the streets of Tokyo. You can see the various ways people are personalizing their cell phones.

I live in New York City, and it’s supposed to be a cool & hip town, but yet, I haven’t noticed too many young people here with cell phone charms & straps. I think I must be the only one!!!! Personally, I think they’re missing out on a really cool trend. But, I’ve been told that cell phone charms & straps are popular elsewhere in the USA. So, my question to ya’all is: Do you decorate your cell phone/Ipod with charms, straps, and stickers? I’d love to hear from you!

BTW, I do sell cell phone charms here at Itsybitsyrobot
